WordPress Screencasts

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

I’m planning to revise some existing WordPress screencasts and add add more. The current collection takes beginning users through an orientation, then shows how to create posts.  Now it’s time to go into more depth on each feature. I’m planning to do a few more in this sequence, showing first how to embed video from FaceBook, and moving on to some other ‘once-over-lightly’ subjects to round out the first 10 videos.

Any feedback is welcome.

Starts by explaining the “More” tag, which is used to put shorter ‘introduction text’ on the main blog page, which links to the full article. Most of this video covers uploading and placing images.

(Note: this does not cover the “Media” area of WordPress Admin, just placing them from within the Editor.)

You can click the “Full Screen” icon while the video is playing, to see a full screen view which is much easier to follow.

In this video we continue in the Post Editor, with Tabs, Spaces, BlockQuotes, Block Indents, Numbered Lists (Ordered Lists, in HTML parlance), Bullet Lists (Unordered Lists), and Undo/Redo. There’s also a quick look at full-screen editing, and a couple other stray buttons and menus.

Hover over the video as it is playing to control volume, etc. You can click the “Full Screen” icon while the video is playing, to see a full screen view which is much easier to follow.

There are some things about the editor in WordPress that are very different than a real word processor, and there are a number of ‘gotchas’ that can be confusing about it. This video explains how to avoid those problems, while adding or formatting text.
